Can I fit the tire standing up to one side and would that fit the gear better?

Yes and yes. My 33 fits with a few inches of space with the ‘fastback’ trektop and the driver seat slid all the way back.

How can I do this storage system while also making the mounting as simple as possible so swapping to a back seat to drive kids around town wouldn’t be so time consuming?

One good strap over the tire will suffice. You just need a good anchor point front and rear.
 
Someone just needs to invent a way to collapse a 35" tire...if it'll hold air it ought to hold vacuum, right?

Maybe try one of these. It works well on blankets, I see no reason you couldn't bag a tire. :sneaky:

Hey @NashvilleTJ since "Glue Tread" has been mentioned, is that the product you used a while back? Was it hard to apply in the field?

This is only related in the sense that Glue Tread has been talked about. It seems that if you want to carry and use Glue Tread, that you also want to carry a battery powered grinder to be able to remove large lugs to create a flat area to glue to.

I carry a battery powered drill and a nylon brush bit to remove any raised lettering on the tire and to sand down the edges of the patch after it’s applied.
 
I power washed the dirty side last night so it wouldn't get my stuff all gross. :ROFLMAO:

Get some sort of cloth or microfiber towel large enough to cover the inside of the rim and protect the stuff you stack in there. The tire on the ground may not die next to a conveniently located trail side pressure washer.
 
Most that lay the tire flat forget to put the pretty side down since there is more room on the dirty side to pack stuff into. Use the space.

My spare hasn't been installed (my fault) so both sides are pretty but you make a good point.
 
Is this a homebrew thing or did you buy that 3-way strap somewhere? What does that front/center strap hook to? I assume the two others connect to the seat brackets? I would trust the 3 point attachment more than a single strap.

Josh is correct it's the Macs version. I clipped the front end to the cross bar on the seat base. It could be done better but it works.

Damage assessment:

One bent hinge pin bolt in the morryde.

MORRyde tub reinforcement bracket is no longer square at the fold where it meets the back of the tub.

The rest of the MORryde kit seems to be unscathed. It did a great job at transferring as much of the energy as possible to the tub. 😒

Looks like surface for lower hinge is pulled out.

Top of tub pushed in. What's weird to me is the bend appears to be below where it's supported by the wheel well.

I tried pulling out on the tub while tapping the bend with my shrinking hammer but it's not going anywhere. I'm a bodywork novice so I think I'm in over my head. Unless you yayhoos have any actionable advice that works within my skill set I guess I'll be getting some body work quotes next week. 😢

@mrblaine obviously I'm not the first person to have this issue, if anyone has experience with this type of damage I figure it would be you. Any wisdom you can offer that will help me going in knowing whether the shop is being honest?

I believe he tested it on a tire once home. We swapped the spare on in the field.

As Ryan said I tested it out on a sidewall slice back in the shop. Applying the patch is easy, but prepping the sidewall can be a pain depending on the side lugs. In my case it took a grinder with an aggressive flap disc to knock off the lugs to create a flat surface for the patch. Could have been done in the field, but it would have been very tough without a grinder.

The patch did hold, but I don’t think it would survive any major rock rubbing, so you would need to be careful exiting a trail.

That said, it would be a major pain to make that repair on one of the treps which I run now.
