Hey everyone. New to the forum and Jeeps in general. Apologies in advance for long thread. Recently bought a 2002 Wrangler with a 6cyl and a 5 speed. Did a pretty decent overview and test drive. No issues that just jumped out at me so I went ahead and bought it. The older lady I bought it from was selling because she couldn’t get in and out of it anymore so seemed legit. We met at a middle location as we were about an hour or so apart. No issues at that time. Drive it to work and home. No issues. Took my Mrs to work and could smell oil but not like burning engine oil. When she got out I had a puddle of what appeared to be ATF. Drove home and parked it. Pulled trans fill plug, at appropriate level. Pulled transfer case plug and got the pepto bismol. Seperated the transfer case from the trans and no issue with any seals. Everything is dry. There’s no way that the case could have been over filled that much is there? Where did all of this fluid come from??

I would guess 1, maybe a touch less. When I initially pulled the fill plug it came gushing out. Maybe lost a quarter qt then

It could indeed be overfilled by a quart. That would have to be the case if it isn't leaking from anywhere.

I would have to agree but how someone got a quart over the fill hole is impressive! 🤣
I guess I’ll put it back together and gonfor a drive. Thanks for additional perspective

That's what I would do. Put it back together and go for a drive. Perhaps they took it to one of those lube shops. I've had those guys mess up a number of times.

Yes sir. Ive had a lot of them come into the shop as well. Did you happen to see the other reply I posted on this thread ?

Additionally, I pulled this bolt out thinking it was a fluid check and can’t get it back in. Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated

That atf is contaminated with water. Maybe check the tc vent and see how it is routed and if it is missing the cap.
