New jeep owner...I am working on my newly acquired 1998 wrangler sport 5spd. Was sitting in a friends back yard for about a year with no use. I got it started and I can drive around in 2wd, but cant shift to 4wd. Stopped the vehicle ant tried to shift..no luck, drove real slow and tried...no luck. I can pull the shifter up about 1-2 inches when it hits a solid stop. Is there some kind of interlock that I need to access to get it to shift?
I have absolutely no experience with Jeeps....Yet!

Does it have a lift or body lift that could bind up the rube Goldberg stock shift linkage? Might want to try disconnecting the tcase lever from the linkage and see if you can get through gears there

First off make sure the shift arm on the transfer case is pointed down. You can bolt it on the wrong way.

Disconnect the linkage and see if you can manually shift it. These videos might help:

I'm convinced a lot of y'all, rightfully so, have a folder with answers to the repeats.....ha. You see it and "Bang" copy, past, done, ha.

Just cuz the dude asking can’t search doesn’t mean the dude answering can’t. 😛
