In preparation for replacing the windshield this upcoming long weekend, last evening I was planning on starting to apply some PB Blaster to the windshield frame hardware . . . in hopes that I’ll be able to loosen them, remove the frame from the Jeep and replace the glass on a workbench.
Some history on this Jeep. So far, EVERY fastener I’ve needed to loosen has been rusted solid. Most fasteners have snapped or the drives have stripped out. My prior ’97 TJ was bad regarding rusted fasteners, but this one is just plain awful. I’ve been putting together alternate plans for when (not if) the windshield related fasteners won’t come loose. Plan B - replace the glass with the frame still on the Jeep. Or Plan C – Cut and remove the hinge pins.
And to make it worse, because I’ve been soaking other areas of this project in penetrant, my last can of PB Blaster was just about empty (I usually by this stuff by the case).
Just for giggles, I grabbed a 3/8” drive T40 socket bit and made an attempt at the windshield frame hardware. To my utter shock, ALL the windshield frame fasteners loosened without much effort . . . and the roll bar bolts at the top also loosened.
