Rear driveshaft questions

It may be. As stated we do not know any history. I do agree to move forward on a new shaft if bent. I have reached out to Tom Woods and will be sending it to them for inspection. I also have to drop the trans because we found a huge Crack in the bell housing. So will be replacing the clutch set up while in there. Not opposed to do the driveshaft myself if it is not bent and can be rebuilt.

I agree with that plan on the driveshaft. Certainly no harm in having it looked at - just appeared to be bent to my eye.

Damn...who did you buy this thing from? This sounds exactly like the '82 CJ7 my brother and I tried to nurse back to health in 2014. The hillbilly that owned it previously molested seriously every single aspect on it. Was a nightmare and eventually we ran out of money (high school kids) and sold it. Hopefully you can bring this one back to good. POs suck.

Also, I suppose maybe it isn't bent but just has super worn splines. It seems the center of the driveshaft is sagging downwards...so unless it's an optical illusion, I expect it's either bent or has worn splines.

Sadly I actually traded a nice VW Beetle for it. The guy said he traded a motorcycle for it and he never got around to replacing the clutch... it doesn't not need a clutch it needs a new bell housing and did not have a skid or trans mount on it. The latter has been resolved. The Jeep has lots of decent stuff on it and will definitely be "restored". I don't give up easily. Plus this is for my son who has been begging for a "Red Jeep" for years and has fallen head over heels for it.

I have zero issue doing all of the wrenching and showing my son how to do things himself. I have built MANY vehicles in the past this is just my first stab at 4x4. Also reaching out to Tom Woods IF this is one of their shafts they will do an inspection and refurbish it for me if possible. At that point im kind of in the middle do I let the experts that built this shaft redo it or try my hand at it and have the satisfaction of doing it myself.

If it's a TW, I would have them do it at this point. I just wouldn't pay a local shop to install etc.
I am actually dropping the height... from 6" to 4"

Smart move. That's assuming it's still the short arm setup. Yeah, I'd have TW do it and rebuild and balance especially, or get a new one.
Curious. I have a 2005, but I think they were all similar, without a Skid plate, how did the Trans and Transfer Case not fall out the bottom of the Jeep?

It is a long arm set up now. I am going to keep that for now as I do not have a welder at the moment to switch it back. Yea the local guy is not going to be getting my business. I am going to send it off to TW. Best case scenario he can rebuild it and I can afford it... worst case scenario he can't and I have to buy a new one that I can't afford right now lol. Either way it has to go to him so... I also have to replace the bell housing on the trans and replace the clutch setup since I'll have the trans out anyways and that will give me a chance to teach my son how to cuss in 3 different languages 🤣🤣🤣

Also... sorry didnt answer your other question. I honestly dont know how it didnt fall out... especially since the PO told me he tried to drive it. I am guessing it was a combo of the drive shaft and front motor mounts.
