What’s wrong with this transfer case?

@JMT what ya think of last night’s videos? He goes underway today and back Wednesday and I’m headed down to move him in to a townhouse with a small garage. That should help with progress. I will be bringing his motorcycle down so that’ll give him another set of wheels if the Jeep is down again.
I think that t-case is going for a rebuild. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Why is the output shaft rotating freely in 2wd?

IDK. It would be nice if he could do the test with it on jackstands.

I believe the output shaft is free in 2wd because he has the 6-speed in neutral and e-brake applied.
I think it’s time for him to get on here and answer the questions but he’s on ship today I think.

Jack stand test was done previously and could not replicate the sound. Only when driving down the road.

But that clank in video 2 sure sounds like the driving noise.

Driving in “front wheel drive” there is no noise that he can hear.

Thanks

If he's on base isn't there an auto shop? There was on most of the bases I was on... And some had parking if your vehicle was inop for a few days or weeks.
I did an engine swap & installed a lift kit in one.

I would use the base shop bits it’s been closed for the last couple months for remodeling or something.

Even if the transmission was in N it shouldn’t turn freely. The TCase has to be in N. So that causes concern. In 4wd it locked up.

I found my vids. See if this helps any. It sounds to me like one sound is identical and you have an additional random sound. So two issues could be hear. I think a ujoint and something in the TCase tail housing.

I'd heard from some friends who were still in up until a few years ago that a lot of the MWR facilities were either closing down or had more limited hours. It sucks. I used to live in the auto shop working on stuff when I was a single soldier.

Hope you can get it figured out.

Quick update. I’m in Va Beach. Picked up a used (78k mile ish) NP241J TJR transfer case in South Jersey on the way down. $1500 cash and I trust Mike, Jeeps Unlimited in Woodbine NJ.
Hopefully today we get it swapped out and everything gets back to normal.
If it fixes it I have a 241 to take home, take apart and see what’s up.
If it doesn’t fix then fuck 🤷🏼‍♂️

It’s out. Not as easy as yall make it out to be but it’s still out.
