Hi all, I am looking into getting a jeep as my second car. I have found a seemingly nice 2001 Jeep Wrangler on marketplace and wanted some advice. It has 125k miles, it's automatic, 6 cylinder, they claim good mechanical shape. I think it's priced pretty fairly, however I do not know much as of now about this market. I did pm the seller and ask about the frame, they replied that a place had rusted around transmission cross member bolts but they blasted and coated it. Is this something I need to worry about and steer clear from? Thank you everyone in advance for the help.

Welcome.. first off.. these vehicles are 20+ years old and they have been around… my advice is to go see it or at least have them get you some pics of it.. frame , back door, just in front of the back wheels, the turn down of the frame where the control arm is connected and of course the transmission cross member they speak of that was repaired… it seems to be a Florida jeep from your tag so it may have some rust due to the salty air down there… surface rust can be addressed.. holes are a different issue.. good luck👍🏻

We need to see high resolution photos of the frame to be of better help.

If you're not mechanically knowledgeable, it'd be a good idea to pay for an independent inspection. $200-300 would be a lot cheaper than some repair like a frame swap.

Jeep is in Georgia

Yes.

Pass it up. Keep looking TN, AL, GA, MS Check the Carfax, if been up north run away.

Search on here to see some pics of others frames etc. Rust is a real problem when you start to work on a TJ.

Sounds good, will do and thank you!

Thanks for letting me know what to look for 👍🏻

If you find one up this way, many of us would be glad to go look at it for you. Just ask. D

What are your specs ?

Some surface rust. Can wire wheel and paint.

I really like the Saharas, Sports, and SE Sports. I prefer automatic, and soft top is fine.

I just found this one, what do you think? Here's the link and some extra photos they sent me.

That is fresh paint.

It doesn’t mean everything is bad but it obviously needed something.

I’m really thinking about how to say this-

These things hit a visceral nerve with buyers just like dirt bikes do and adventure toys-

Don’t let mud tires or aggressive looks excite you as much as one in good condition with decent mileage that shows pride of ownership.

And if you’re looking for something you can just get in and drive and drive and drive and never have to do anything to you probably need to look at something a lot newer.

These things are best in the hands of owners that are pretty handy and willing to pick up a wrench.

Dude...you are in Florida! Do not settle for anything less than spotless - like your second one.

Zero rust, period!

First one doesn’t look terrible to me but I’d want more pics including of the body mounts. A couple of the blurry pics look suspect but they are too blurry to know for sure. Surface rust is normal. Structural damage is not.

Second vehicle looks really good. Almost too good.
