GPS Upgrade - Looking for Options for a Rugged Android Tablet

CAT makes industrial android phones, I would be surprised if they didn't have a tablet line too.

I will say this: Apple does not make consumer grade crap - its commercial grade which is why its so expensive. BUT - in its turn, commercial grade doesn't equate to industrial or military grade. Commercial grade is plenty fine for MOST situations. In the PC realm, Dell, Lenovo, and HP all make commercial grade hardware that costs about the same as an equivalent Apple, but you don't find that stuff at Mall*Wart or Best Buy. I have no idea about commercial grade Android tablets.

I don't do Apple... Don't like them and won't use them..

I got to play with a lot of military grade laptops and tablets but that was almost 20 years ago too so I have no idea what's available now.

I've used Apple since about Y2K, but I'm returning to Linux "next time". I'm sick and tired of both Apple and M$.

I can't fucking wait until Steam and Proton develop far enough to take windows off my gaming PC. Last device I have that has it. Gaming just isn't quite there yet unfortunately

Can you run a double DIN Android radio in place of the secondary unit? I've got the ATOTO double DIN until that runs Android. I can download any app that is on the Android App Store.

Do you mean in place of the head unit in the dash? I suppose I could, but the screen is not a large as the GPS, and I do want to have a unit dedicated to GPS. I don't want to be flipping back and forth between the radio, cameras, etc.

How often do you change the radio?

I rarely, if ever, listen to the radio when I wheel. But I use the cameras, which display through the head unit, all the time. I also don't want the GPS to shut down every time I shut off the engine. As I said, I basically want the GPS to be completely stand alone.

I didn't know that was a thing - I haven't played computer games written after about 1982 or so.

Yeah Proton is like wine if you've ever used that. Steam is an online game storefront (the biggest one by a pretty big margin) and they have Proton integrated in if you're using Linux.

You can see Linux still makes a pretty small subset of gamers on Steam...

I'm with you there on this. My radio will allow me to load anything Android on it but I also want a stand alone GPS unit. Plus the radio isn't in your line of sight as well as how you & I have our GPS units mounted. I don't what to have to look down at the radio screen. Now I do listen to my music sometimes when wheeling.

I've still got to figure out where to mount my front camera.

I have my GPS wired in so it runs even when the ignition is off. So again a reason to have a dedicated GPS.

I spent a good bit of time over the last few days researching rugged tablets. I looked seriously at over a dozen, but these were the units that made the final list:

https://sxsruggedtablets.com/produc...-road-vehicle-gps-tablet-with-docking-station

https://www.amazon.com/RT71-Pro-Ruggedized-Tablet-1200NIT-Military/dp/B094WCWF42/?tag=wranglerorg-20

https://www.amazon.com/MUNBYN-Android-Waterproof-Handheld-Computer/dp/B0D65TLJTT/?tag=wranglerorg-20

https://www.amazon.com/Android-Wate...-Collection/dp/B07ST1XPCC/?tag=wranglerorg-20

https://www.amazon.com/HUGEROCK-Sun...-Waterproof/dp/B0CNXPTHG2/?tag=wranglerorg-20

And after a lot of comparison and research, I wound up pulling the trigger on the unit that Ryan ( @Apparition ) originally identified for me, along with their mount.

This is the tablet. The cost was $861.00

And this is the mount. The cost was $125.00.

Rick - no additional discount for buying two. In fact, they gave me the price discount as if I was buying three. So I'll check this one out first, and you can see if it looks like it would work for you.

Overall, the unit is about the same height and width of my current 7" screen Lowrance GPS, and this unit has an 8" screen. The processor looks like it will be fairly (The SnapDragon!) powerful and runs Android 12. 1280x800 resolution, sunlight viewable, IP68 and IP69, with a 1.2+m drop rating. 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of on-board storage. It also has an external micro drive which will support up to 512GB.

I also really liked their mount, which I can easily modify for a permanent installation on the dash bar. Most of the other units I was considering would have required me to build a completely custom mount. And this one looks to be pretty tough.

I'm exciting to see this thing in person. Hopefully it matches my expectations - we shall see...

Thanks for all the input. Especially you, Ryan. Nice work.

Looking forward to the review

I'll be watching for your review and to see how well it holds up to the rigors of Jeff & the School Bus wheeling trips. Them tonz 7 fodeeeees are hard on stuff.

That isn't a bad price over all when you figure one of the Rugged GPS units are $1k for the same size screen.

You know me...I went as cheap as possible...the one I bought from SGIN is no longer available...and I keep this firewalled and off the Internet or any network because I don't trust Chinese Android devices...tablet mount was $18. Scrap piece of 1/8" steel. Less than $100. GPS seems as accurate as anything else.

Just to clarify...this is not a true gps unit, correct?
From the description found in your link (available again btw) it appears to use telephone telemetry with an app.
