All jokes aside, this is actually serious.

We're stuck at the hospital in Portland (45 miles away_ while our daughter recovers from kidney surgery. My Mom was headed down to Salem (where we live) today to do some things, and I had her drive me down with her so that I could pickup my Jeep and drive it to Jeeps West so that @David Kishpaugh and his crew could install the lift, tummy tuck, and various other parts one my Jeep.

Well, I get home now and find out my Jeep key is all the way back in the hospital in Portland!!!

I can have my Mom drive me back to the hospital, but then this will have been a waste of a trip. I'm trying to figure out if there's an easy way to unlock my steering and start the Jeep without a key?

If not, then I guess I'll just have to do this another time. I just hate to have waisted a trip, and I'm so frustrated on top of all of it for various other reasons!

Anyways, if any good information is given here, I'll just delete the thread, since I realize this is a sketchy topic.

I’m trying to remember if you have to have the key to remove the lock cylinder if you first disassemble the column. For example, using the same steps that would be used to replace the ignition actuator pin.
Searching now

I don't believe there is an easy way to get around your locking steering.

Yep, that was my biggest fear. Ugh... It's not the end of the world, it's just a wasted 45 mile trip (and lots of traffic) each way.

I really need to remind myself to have a spare key made!

A quick refresher look at the FSM confirms my fear that there isn’t an ez way to remove the lock cylinder if you have no key.
Sorry

Sorry

That's what I feared... Bummer.

Looks like I'll just have to make the trip at another time. I should have thought to check my suitcase before I left the hospital.

If you swing by a dealer with proof of ownership, a dealer can retrieve a key code using your VIN # and cut you a new key. . The newly cut key won’t need to be programmed since you don’t have SKIM

That thought had crossed my mind. But of course by the time I get around to that, it will be too late to drop my Jeep off at the shop anyways, so I guess it's a moot point now.

Of all the days this could have happened, I swear...

I hope your kiddo is doing ok, good luck with the Jeep

Thanks! She's recovering, just being difficult. We've been at the hospital since Sunday night, and we could have gone home today, but they won't release her until she's drinking 1-2 ounces of fluid per hour, and right now we aren't even close to that!

Chris not having your key sucks but you have reminded me to get a spare key made to hide on the Jeep. I have a hidden key on every other rig I own.
You probably didn’t need this hiccup given the issue with your daughter.

Yes, I really need to have that spare key made, and it's the first thing I'll do now. I kept putting it off when I bought the Jeep, and this is a reminder.

Any other day I would have just shrugged this off, but the fact that it's all happening while everything else with our daughter is going on, that's what really grinds my gears.

My 2006 uses a chipped key. I had the local hardware store cut me a non chip key for towing. I just leave it in the center console since you can’t drive the Jeep with it. Sorry it doesn’t help you now but that would allow you to flat tow it home if you have a towbar setup.

Since you don't have SKIM there is a way to start and drive your Jeep. But it also means that your Jeep won't need a key until you fix the lock cylinder.

Take a screw driver or shim of some sort and stick it into the lock. Grab that with pliers or a bar to get leverage on it. And turn until the pins in your lock cylinder break. You now have a Jeep that will start and run without a key. We did this trick on old farm trucks so nobody would lose the keys.
