Getting too much air into the radiator?

I've heard people claim that grille inserts don't block enough airflow to cause overheating. Even if they're correct those inserts in that link look to be blocking more than 50% of each opening. Probably not much different than duct taping over 4 of the seven slots.

My buddy has those on his 98. It's my least favorite part of the Jeep. That said, they've been on there for 10 years or more and have never affected the cooling system. His are starting to loosen up, though, as they attach with double sided tape. I just checked my pictures and I don't have any that show the grill clearly. If I find a picture, or have a chance to take one soon, I'll post it up here.

Ill be one to claim this. Even with a V8, I can barely get up to temp in the winter with even more restrictive grill inserts than the ones posted and blocking 3 of the 7 with tape so maybe 80% reduction in airflow overall compared to no inserts. Hottest I ever got was just under 240*F towing a SxS with a locked wheel up a sand hill for a mile in 4L (with grill inserts but no tape over any of them) but dropped back to temp quickly once moving with no additional load. Full disclosure, I do use a larger radiator so that could help but if 80% reduction in airflow wont even heat up a V8, I would think those probably more free flowing inserts would do alright with smaller engine. But this is my experience, others may have had worse luck.

I had these ^^^ Installed by the PO
Took them out. The paint under them was wrecked by sand and dirt wedge behind. Good thing you have that caked on wax to protect it!!
Never had an issue with overheating when they were installed, I just don't like them
