Has anyone had success installing a torque converter ahead of a manual in our TJs? Or an similar system for manual shifting with a torque converter's benefits? I know I could put a manual valve body in an automatic, but are there other options?

1970's VW AutoStick was very similar to what you describe. Used the same 3 gears as the manual tranny with an electrically controlled Servo/Vacuum to run the Torque Converter.

Just go with an automatic. Add a cool shifter if you need one. You can hold it in 1st or 2nd with an automatic, no need for anything else.

BMW tried the auto/manual on their 6 speed manual, pretty sure it went over like a lead balloon.

It’s great for crawling. Where it’s a problem is I can barely hit 30 in 6th and 4lo, and 1st in 4hi can lug the engine on rocky trails.
I know that manually shifting an auto will give me the performance I’m asking for. However, I like driving a manual. So I’m looking for the best of both

If you want you keep your 6spd an Atlas is the answer. You need something in-between 1:1 and 4:1.
