Side window defrost always on?

Just finishing up my heater core replacement and making sure all my fan modes are functioning right before buttoning the dash back up.
All seems good except I noticed the side window defrost vents are always on, are they supposed to be?

Mine aren't on my 97...well...they are all fall, winter and spring but that's pretty much because the HVAC controls are parked on defrost/foot until it warms up and drys out for the couple of months we call summer in the PNW.

I never could find anything abnormal to cause it. I think that may just be the way it is supposed to work.

It's normal , you still look through the side windows and mirrors all the time.
