If the 4 lbs hammer has a difficult time, then you'll need to hold one hammer on one side, then smack the other side with another hammer... so it kind of squishes (really will not squish it)
I know everyone says to do it that way but I wish folks would stop. I've thrown away far too many knuckles where the hole is no longer round for the tie rod pin because they smashed it so hard to get it out. May as well just cut the steering arm off at that point.
I understand this concern and I am a bit worried about it. I guess at this point I'm thinking if it takes so much force to get the pin out that it damages the knuckle, the knuckle was probably damaged already.
I've heated it, but hot enough to melt, wouldn't that kind of heat also damage the knuckle?
Not really. Just take a large center punch, grab the end with some vise-grip style pliers so you have a handle, put the point in the divot in the end of the pin and drive it straight down with largish shop hammer. I've removed 100's that way without a single time of damage or failure to get it out.
I started using the punch method to take the steering apart a while back. It works well and is actually easier and faster than the beatitwithahammer way.
If only we knew someone who did videos who could show that?
Someone with a BFH and a garage, even.
How is it easier and faster? A BFH does it for her every time. I pick up a hammer, not a hammer AND a punch.
Maybe I can see it if the TRE is stuck like the OP's, but otherwise it is very simple.
I've noticed that I spend less time beating on the knuckle than I do giving the stud a good hit with a punch.
This statement could mean way too many thing when taken out of context.
