I have an 06 LJ. I am the furthest thing from a car connoisseur.

All things considered, the car has been incredibly decent once I installed the new PCM; still thinking of selling it related to the chaos I endured prior to that with anxiety that it can still return.

When the car idles for longer periods (over 20 minutes - example in a slow moving drive through) the temperature gauge on the dash begins to rise higher (between middle and red zone). On hotter days, it takes about 15 minutes of idling before the temperature begins to rise substantially. A few months ago, it idled for 10 minutes in 102 degree hot humid sunny weather and came very close to red area before turning off car. It did not throw any codes at this point. The coolant reservoir remains full.

Obviously this is an older car, and it isn't at the point where it overheats normally as I am rarely idling that long. I dont want it to turn into something that continues to exacerbate & puts my engine at a higher risk. Is this something I should expect since its an older? Or is there something (affordable) you recommend to help this issue? would a radiator flush do anything? Hope this is enough info and thank you in advance to the usual & new helpers.

Have you done anything to it yet?
Or, had it checked by a mechanic?

The bare bones basic would a coolant flush and fill. Then, on a cold engine (not running, of course) how freely does the fan spin?

Then move on to water pump and thermostat.

These are all normal maintenance items BTW.

You definitely have a cooling system issue. Where I live it's much hotter than 102 and mine idles for prolonged periods just fine, and that's with the A/C on. It looks like you haven't invested any time in the cooling system. If it were mine I would do a complete cooling system overhaul as referenced in the post above. It can be accomplished in just a few hours, with minimal hand tools and for under $500. Then you're problems would go away.

What is the color of the coolant that is presently in the radiator ?
IF there is a tint of brown to muddy brown; then it is definitely time to chemically flush the radiator.
Also consider checking the radiator for obstructions in the air flow thru the radiator.
