Weird mosquito sound

I have a 2006 TJ and the other day I noticed a weird mosquito sound (or high pitched noise) coming from the hood. It’s faint whenever I’m driving, but it’s really loud whenever I’m driving between 1000-2000 RPM at 40MPH. Usually, cruising RPH is around 1500, but he’s been riding at 2000 since the issue appeared. I have a RHD and the noise is coming from the general area of the computer. I’m hoping it’s not the manifold and the oil looks clean 🙏. Anyone have an idea on what it could be?

Original PCM?

@Wranglerfix is "mosquito sound" on your list of signs of a failed PCM? =)

I think at the least I'd disconnect the PCM connectors and check them for corrosion.

Your HVAC fan motor is down under there too...might want to check that too.

Do you live in the American south, and could it in fact be mosquitos about to lift off with your Jeep? :unsure:

Tell me this, does the sound happen when the radio is off?

PCM is new. First thing I replaced 2 years ago when I got it because it’s known to have issues. The HVAC though… I’ll look into it..

Florida has over 80 different species of mosquitoes, though some sources cite the number around 90. These species include native and nonnative types, with a significant number being considered disease vectors (like the Asian tiger mosquito) or nuisance pests that can transmit serious viruses such as West Nile,dengue, chikungunya, and Zika.

I have an 06 and I have heard this to! I can never pin point the issue. When I heard the sound I thought it was my radio so I turned that off. I haven’t driven my jeep in months 😞 the noise does end up going way.

Checked the exhaust manifold bolts yet? The back one by #6 is famous for loosening just enough to be annoying.
