So, i have a bent tailgate. I purchased the cheap replacement from ebay. Finally getting around to installing it and sure enough, its got some fitment issues. Started with the lock, and a little filing got that in no problem. Then i tested the handle it seems to be .100” deeper than the tailgate pocket. The holes are also higher up on the tailgate then the handle. I am way outside the return window.

My question is: are the handles different depths on different years? Mine measures about 1.1” thick and the tailgate recess for it is about 1”.

Pretty sure the latch was the same part for 1997-2006 TJs. The latch cover on the interior is different after 2002 - switched from metal to plastic and it attaches differently - but exterior latch appears to be unchanged for all years.

Just measured the depth of the recess on a 2006 OEM tailgate and it’s just under 1” from the screw “bracket” to the latch lip, or right around 1” from the bracket to the face of the tailgate, pic of OEM is below.

OEM latch fit into a cheap Tawainese tailgate for our 2006 ok, but the QC on that tailgate is not great. Had to dremmel out the lock hole and expand screw holes on the latch bracket, but the latch did fit into the recess.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the bracket depth wasn’t set deep enough based on the lack of consistent QC. Can you pop it out and spot weld it back in deeper?

I actually just purchased the latch from the same company i got the tailgate. Also made in taiwan. Will see if it fits, or if not i can send it back.

I dont really have access to a welder to reposition the bracket or i would.

Worst case it will be a lesson learned and a little money lost.

I've also got one for sale for $200. I'm in Eugene/Springfield and my wife just got back from visiting friends in Boise.

My FB ad disappeared so that's a good reminder to make a new one.
