Trunk area getting hot

Hi everyone! The trunk of my 2002 wrangler x is heating up a lot. I didn’t notice this until some water got into the trunk and then we used the car and there was steam coming off the floor. The trunk floor was so hot. Any one know why this is happening and if we could do anything to stop it? We don’t have the back seat in for more storage and are worried of our stuff getting too hot especially with summer coming along. My boyfriend says it’s the area right above the muffler.

The exhaust may be closer to the body than designed if it’s been modified.

You may be missing a heat shield, and reflective heat shield material is sold in parts stores and online.
