Storage Bins

If you are totally deleting your backseat, you can use the mounting points in the center and rear of the cargo area as attachment points. I bolted some 2x4s there and mounted airline rail on top of them. You could instead mount plywood or some other sheet good and mount to your heart's content across the whole area.

I’ve officially deleted the backseat in the LJ. I’ve used the rear seat mounting brackets before to tie things down too in the TJ. The LJ has one side and is missing the other side. The extra bracket is kinda expensive. 🤨I have a cooler, spare, tools, and fluids to find a place for. Biggest issue is the spare. I feel like it should be on the floor since it’s so much heavier than the other stuff.

Here’s an option I hadn’t seen before. My main interest in a hard bin that seals is extra fluids for the Jeep. This one is not too expensive.

Collapsible, so interesting for storage at home if you don’t keep permanently packed

Sideo Storage Crates have dividers.

I have these and have hauled one to Moab since 2021 in my truck. It holds all my spare fluids. Thing about it is I haven't ever collapsed it so there's no reason for it to be collapsible.

How “clever.” We have some similar that we use for Costco runs. They actually do get collapsed every time they get home! Ok, going to work on the Jeep. Work done today.

The other two are collapsed and stored somewhere in the house.

Not quite a storage bin, but a single Pelican 95 quart cooler fits between the wheel wells.

You might have to take the hardtop off temporarily to get it inside in that orientation though. Haven’t tried that yet so not 100% sure…

How do you like having the cover over the whole bed area? Granted I see it’s not over the cooler, but is that like an ideal situation in your opinion?

I like it, it’s currently on the Jeep now fully covered. I notched the plastic down the sides so I can run it with the rear seat in use and it works decently for that. Nice to have an out of site place to put stuff.

I use the HF Baeur locking boxes for my camp gear. One large and one small, stacked with the rear seat folded forward and a Tuffy Security Enclosure. I can fit a Yeti in the empty space so I'd bet another two Baeur boxes would fit as well.

I removed the brackets and used the threaded holes they were attached with to mount the blocking for my airline rail.

Is your spare too big to mount upright? Only place that wouldn't block too much vision would be right behind your seat.

Another option would be to build a platform above your interior spare that is just tall enough for you to get your hand over the tire to the wheel to yank it out when you need it. Could even cubby it so that the spare doesn't need to be secured. Then you could mount your fridge and other cargo to the top of the platform.

I had the top platform of my drawers resting above the wheel-wells. Was inconvenient when grocery-getting in the summer with the top off. Had to strap everything down since the lip of the tub was only a few inches above my new floor. Again, different situations.

I have some rubbermaid Max totes that are really large. I don't think they make them any longer, but they go from tailgate to rear footwell and had a handle that passed through the lid. I have a third one that was about half length and it leaves room for a cooler. IIRC, we usually stacked the 2 long ones on one side, the cooler and short one on the other and then some smaller soft bags above that. Haven't done a long camping road trip in the jeep for quite a while, but we still use the bins in all our cars and they've always been handy for organizing the big volume stuff like sleeping bags and tents.

Ours are/were 35" long 16.5" wide and 15" tall at the widest part on top of the lid.

All good ideas. I need to see if I can put the spare upright behind my seat. I did that once when wheelin’ at Reiter about a year ago on the red one. Just need something more substantial than what I built before.

I need to get all my crap together and put it in the back of the LJ and just look at it and decide what to do.

I like the idea of everything below the lip of the tub. I haven’t run a spare for years, so that may be what I sacrifice.

I’ve thought about a platform above the spare for cooler and small storage tub. I’ll try to figure it all out next eeek. It’s time. Thanks for ideas.

I was using two of the HF crates next to my fridge. Which was nice for easily pulling them out, but having everything covered in dust was a bit annoying. Especially my day packs.

Still experimenting with different load outs. My backset is back in the Jeep and my soft top back on as I'm doing a 5 day 4 night backpacking trip this week and she'll be left at a trail head. And then the following week taking my two girls on a backpacking trip before school starts and using the Jeep again to get to that trail head. But then later this month, I'll probably pull the seat for a trip to Wyoming.

I threw this trunk together really quick before a Moab trip in March and I’ve grown to really like it. Back seat still fits, throw all my gear below and put e-track up top to strap coolers or whatever else too. Been pretty handy and semi-secure storage for every day use.

What do you attach up top

So far it’s just been coolers, but they make all sorts of e-track accessories to put whatever you want there. I had a bunch left over from my toy hauler so I put it down to give flexibility in tie down points as well as it added a lot of rigidity to the deck.
