Shift interlock question

I was doing some work on my Jeep yesterday, I was neutralizing the drive train and had it running in neutral and tried to shut the key off. I could not turn the engine off without shifting to park. Is there something going on with the interlock or is this normal for a 06 LJ?

That's normal for me, my '04 works like that too.

Most modern vehicles do this to protect us from our stupidity. I hit this feature about once a month in my F250.
