I need help with identifying my left rear axle shaft(06 LJ, Dana 44 LSD). My rear axle shafts were leaking. I watched some You Tube videos, and decided to pull them myself. The drivers side was extremely sloppy(up, down, side to side), after removing just two nuts. I realized that the retainer plate was of the drum brake sort, and the shaft was aftermarket(MW). The passenger side was normal, tight when removed. I acquired one disc brake retainer plate. I bought the National bearing kit(2), and Timken seal(2). I had a local shop press off old, and press on new. I installed passenger side first, went in perfect. Drivers side not. The axle shaft would not go in. I don’t think the drivers side was ever seated into the differential, and was bolted on with the brake drum retainer, hence the slop. The previous owner said that one of the rear axles had broken, & was replaced. I believe a backyard mechanic did not know how to identify axles.
With that being said, I need one used, drivers side rear axle shaft. I have called around(Down East NC), and no one has just the axle shaft. I guess I will need a new one. I need some recommendations on axle shaft replacement. I would rather have OEM, and not aftermarket. Thank you.

Is the race still in the housing end?

I have a pair of used OE Dana 44 disc brake axle shafts with reasonably fresh bearings (~5k miles on them) out of an 05 non-Rubicon LJ. Send me a PM if you're interested and what you think is fair. You'll have to let me know whether you need the longer or the shorter one because I've long since forgot which side was which.

Dana 44 follows the front. Long to long, short to short.

Rear, correct?

The first pic is of the passenger side rear wheel axle. I took it to show that the axle tube was free and clear of blockage.

I just found my build sheet. Apparently, my LJ came equipped with a Heavy Duty Dana 44 rear axle. What’s the difference between that and a Dana 44?

I don’t think it’s anything out of the ordinary. Mine says that too.
