So, I'm stumped guys. Was driving home last night and suddenly I lost oil pressure and the engine started running like crap. Fast forward to today, I went to pull the distributor and found the locking bolt so loose I was able to remove it by hand. Pulled the distributor, set TDC, put the distributor back in made sure it was set and now it won't start. What the heck. Anyone got any ideas?

Are you sure it was at TDC on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke? Did you pay attention to the orientation of the alignment holes on the distributor when you reinstalled it?

My hold down clamp was completely missing when I bought my TJ which led to my distributor cracking at the body where that clamp should be holding it down.

I had my wife checking for air coming from cylinder one without the plug in, and she said she could feel air.

I would investigate that your not 180 out, you get air on both upstrokes. If one is not a tuned to what is happening could of miss read the moment.

Followed the recommendation and rotated 180. Turning over more smoothly now, but still not starting. Getting pops from the exhaust, but that's about it.

Just want to make sure that you feel good that you are on the compression stroke- and did not just swap 180 because of our theories. it sounded like 180 was a likely but might be some other things in play now that you tried it both ways.

It's not that bad. But double and triple check your TDC on the distributor first.

Yeah, I'm probably going to try and get it towed up to my shop and get a hand from one of my buddies that's more experienced with these 2.5s. Also out of the sun.
