Last summer in July I went to the lake and its all highway and did a bit of wheeling on small trails that's there and it was fine the whole time but the day before I went I just picked up my 2006 TJ from the transmission shop after my OEM one failed . After having a great weekend I was headed home and about 10 to 20 mins down the road I started having DW and my jeep studering and when I'd stop at a stop sign and try and go again I tried to press the gas down and it would jerk me back and forth while in the drivers seat but after a bit of going it would be fine but happen at any stop . I got almost home that evening and the jeep was idling at a light and randomly just shut off while its in drive and had to have help pushing it off the road
Any suggestions on what it is ? the issue hasn't came back since but I'm afraid if I take it out again this summer the same thing will happen . My TJ is my DD and has around 172k miles on it currently . the trans shop I towed it to couldn't get the CEL to come back on so I really don't know . My TJ has had odd things happen to it that others haven't .

Like said if anyone knows what the hell was wrong at the time let me know please Im wondering what the issue is . It's gone now but just curious if it does happen again

In the morning to you from South Florida,

How is your shifting from 1st to 2nd in the mornings? Do you ever get a hard shift?

If the check engine light was on rest assured it will come on again.

Thanks,

Mark

  • If the torque converter clutch (TCC) is engaging when it shouldn't, it could cause the jerking at stops and random stalling.
  • Try unplugging the TCC solenoid connector and see if the issue improves.
  • If your TJ randomly shuts off at idle, the crankshaft position sensor could be failing.
  • A failing CKP often won’t store a code if it comes back to life after cooling down.

Thank you I found my answer so if it happens again I know what to look for online and buy the sensor

I don’t think I had any hard shifts at all at the time , it was a new transmission reman I just had put in at my local tranny shop so i wouldn’t assume there would be any hard shifting . Also I think the cel was on . I can’t remember though . Should I fix the problem if nothing’s happened yet or wait till it happens and resolve the problem?

I don't think I specified from my last post here but I do have an auto trans and I think the trans shop cleared the jeeps CEL I'd imagine so Idk if it'll come back on or not . it is about 60 miles southeast of me mainly highway miles and back . when I picked up my jeep the trans was just freshly installed and don't know if the trans was highway ready yet that quick but It did well . if you have any other answers or anything let me know . its an odd thing the jeep did but no one I've talked to ever heard of it

Unclear explanation. I’m reading fast this morning so I might be misunderstanding something but your posts cause confusion to me. What specifically was the code or codes? Any check engine lights now? If so, what codes?

If it’s actual death wobble that has nothing to do with the engine or transmission.

It is possible you have two separate issues going on that just happened to pop up at the same time.

If it was real DW, it may have caused some bare wires to short out. Check for harness damage behind the engine (passenger side) or around the transmission. Maybe the transmission harness wasn't routed properly when the trans. was replaced.

Coming back to this post , my death wobble I had I figured it out that my mud tires I had on at the time was wearing down and plus all the steering up front has play in it which is getting replaced soon . got new all terrain tires now and no more DW . but going back to the other situation its hard to explain because it hasn't came back on so I guess I'll take the answers up above and start replacing stuff I guess or I could go and ask the trans shop that had my jeep at the time what it may be or the code would be if it ever popped up again .
