Is the stock roll cage padding necessary?

I just bought a 2000 Tj sport and tried to remove the rear pads to see the original white finish on the roll cage. The zipper was heavily corroded because I live in salty Florida and broke the zipper. I was wondering if they are really needed when the soft top is on. I am 16 and just bought the jeep so I’m pretty strapped for cash so purchasing a new set of padding and covers is out of the question. Do they reduce squeaking or rubbing or are they simply for extra protection for your head when off-roading?

Thanks!

I wouldn’t recommend taking them off anywhere around passenger/driver’s head. Whether it be off-road bumps or an on-road serious accident or rollover, you’ll want the padding there. Also, if you have a frameless soft top, it won’t fit quite right without the padding. For future info, bar soap or crayons work fairly well to lubricate the zippers.

Thank you so much! I have a framed top so I should be in good shape. Thanks again!

Yes. Ask me how I know...

I have a late model 03-06, and I leave the pads on the bar between the A and B Pillar. The rest I removed, mainly because they were getting old and after painting them with cloth paint I flipped and tore some of it, so it’s gone. I think the important part for the driver and passenger is what I described. The rest would be helpful for rear passengers.
