I nearly died (for real)

Man, some of you guys talk like you've never woke up at the wheel before 🤣

You wanna talk lights going out...

In college, my great aunt and uncle let me live in their Oklahoma house for free while they spent most of the year in Florida, all I had to do was maintain the acreage and keep the dog alive. Catch was, it was 15 miles out of town out by the lake. Driving home late at night once I dozed off and came out of it cruising down the bar ditch on the opposite side of the road with a heavy duty steel pipe mailbox fast approaching. I think my 300zx caught air coming back onto the road.

Second time is when I confirmed the widened bases of those concrete highway bases ARE wide enough that your tires will hit before your side mirror, at least if you're driving a rented Nissan Altima.

Years ago I learned to stop at a convenience store and get the biggest drink cup they have and fill it with ice. As long as I'm chewing ice I don't get drowsy....that trick has probably kept me alive, but it's not great for jaw and teeth. These days I do pretty well at avoiding driving after my usual bed time.

patrick swayze has a movie came out long time ago about the “red dog “
truckers term for falling asleep at the wheel.

had that one moving to Texas. if i was a semi would have destroyed the vehicle whose taillights i was attacking 40mph faster then.

Yup! Driving a 62 Chevy II at night , went to switch on the high beams , stepped on the dimmer switch and the highlights turn off ! Kicking the switch like a madman with my left foot while locking up the brakes HARD with my right foot. Stopped while still on the road in the dark at the end of some ugly skid marks.

I remember something like that when I was 16 driving my dads freshly redone T/A. I forget what the issue and fix was, but I was driving home one night and the headlights started on/off cycling, 10 seconds on, 10 seconds off. I had a 10 minute drive like that. :ROFLMAO:

Cars had a auto reset circuit breaker usually in the switch in an effort to save your butt if a short happened in the circuit.

This was/is a '79 Trans Am, and I remember the fix being under the hood, maybe a voltage regulator. I can't remember now, which is sad because I used to know a lot of cause/fix for old cars that I just haven't used in a while.
