Sitting here with a power outage from storms that rolled through. Figured it's time to say hello. Just recently got a 1999 TJ. I had a 1976 CJ7 in the late 70's and most of the 80's. Moved on to full size 4x4 trucks after having kids. Later found a 1974 FJ40 LC that I did a bunch of work on, still kick myself for getting rid of it but at the time it was my daily driver and was taking the near grown kids to school. Got back into the full size trucks again, have a 1990 Silverado, my hunting truck, and a 2002 F250 with 7.3 PSD, that I plan to keep until they take the keys away from me or I croak, whichever comes first.
I've enjoyed reading through the information and am learning a lot. This TJ has several things I want to address, apparent 3" lift, running 33x12.50/15's, it 1.5" TC drop (want to get it back up for the extra clearance). Don't like the way the rear is set up, haven't checked angles but pinion seems to be pointing slightly above TC output. Driveshaft and TC output look like they are almost form a straight line. Would like to go with a SYE.
Installed new hub/bearing units, rotors, calipers and pads on front, drums, wheel cylinders, hardware kit and shoes on the rear. Changed interior bulbs and underhood light to LED's. Have the Toyota Kiota (or whatever) headlights to install. New floormats, winch, spare tire and console armrest covers.
Things I've got to do, find out where a grinding type sound is come from. It's a cyclic sound, not continous, noted above 25 mph, until engine, exhaust, wind noise covers it up. I'm leaning towards it being the rear differential, going to open it up for a peak soon. I would hate to jump into the rear end and the TC turn out to be the noise culprit. It needs bumpstops as there are none on it now. Needs new tires, the tread and outside look excellent, the inside shows dry rot cracking, they are 12 year BFG AT's (I guess it's possible that the rubber has hardened and that's my noise?). I want to address the suspension in the front and rear. While jacking up the front, I barely got one side off the ground before the other side started rising. Oh, the list goes on but the grinding issue and tires are going to be my priorities for now. I've got 2 grown sons and 4 grandkids, #5 due in about 6 weeks (hey, now you know where my time any money go). Anyway, maybe I've kind of introduced myself. Oh, and I do a lot of 4 wheeling, but none of it rock crawling, sand or mountain climbing. It's all hills, ruts, slick red clay, mud holes, stuff commonly found in central Alabama. I think this forum is going to be a good ride also, thanks for letting me in.
