2001 TJ that I bought used a few months ago. First thing I needed to do was change the front brake pads and rotors and rear brake drums. The pads and rotors are something I’ve done before and on this vehicle were even easier than the other ones I’ve changed in the past. The rear drums were a little more difficult, but still went smoothly, and everything seemed to be a success. Recently, about 2 months since changing the front pads and rotors, my right side front brake has been sticking. It starts off barely noticeable, just barely pulling the vehicle to the right as I drive, but as it goes on it gets worse and worse to the point where I can hear the grinding and the Jeep will stop if I don’t accelerate. Also, I can’t tell what instigates it, but it seems to happen randomly.

I’ve read a few threads on here where people discuss sticking front brakes and see 2 common suggestions, namely: debris or air in the brake line that needs to be flushed out, dysfunctional master push rod and/or booster (?). I can read up or watch a video about bleeding, but I’m not sure what the master and booster people mention are. Either way, I’ve only seen posts where both front brakes experience the issue simultaneously. In my case, it’s only the front right side. Also, once I put cold water on the brakes and cool them down they release and function properly. I can go for days without experiencing the problem, or it can happen 3 times in a day.

Considering all these details, what should I be looking into in order to fix this issue? When I changed the brakes 2 months prior to this happening I noticed the calipers weren’t looking too hot, would replacing these maybe fix this issue? Thanks for any information, I’d really like to avoid a trip to a mechanic. I don’t have a relationship with any in particular, this is the first time I’ve owned an older vehicle that I wouldn’t just take to the dealership because it’s under warranty when something breaks.

Look for the piston sticking in the caliper, divots on the knuckle rail that the pads slide on, or the soft brake line internally swelling. All three will cause this. the sticking piston and the soft line will get worse as the brakes heat up...

hello everyone,

i have exactly the same problem - right side brake blocking from time to time. drives me crazy - loads of smoke and melting hubcap yesterday.

after letting it cool down for a day, all is like normal, no more blocking. .

already changed all hard lines and the softlines to the calipers. calipers and brake pads also new.
fluid flushed out using a professional bleeder.

maybe sth. with the masterbrake cylinder? i think the problem occours when i park in a position thats not level to the ground, slightly up- or downhill.
would anybody mind sharing how you solved it?

thx,

thomas

I would bet money that @mrblaine knows why. He knows all. I hear he does sleep 2 hours a day, so give him a couple of hours to respond because of the time zone differences.

About the only thing left is something with the knuckle where the pads ride. The front brake calipers are fed from the same fluid circuit even though there are 2 lines. They are common to each other at the combination valve which is a T for the front lines. The only way to get one side to have a problem in this case since everything has been replaced is to isolate it below the frame which points to a problem with the knuckle.

What does the gasket in the cap on the fluid reservoir look like? Normal or swollen?

Could this be solved with different calipers? You've mentioned there are several different castings...

How does or would that cause the intermittent nature of his issue? The only thing a different casting might do is cause a seal issue and a seal issue is not likely to be intermittent. I don't know how divots in the sliders can cause it but there isn't a lot left if all the brake parts have been replaced.

Stuck guide sleeves, but they'll do it all the time. Hydraulics don't stick one side so that rules out the booster, master, combo valve, hard lines and flex hoses.

Process of elimination points to other than brake system parts.

Thx. guys! i will start with closeley examining the caliper and the sliders. and do another flush.

regarding the —--below the frame - knuckle area ——- what do i have to look for?

gasket looks stock.

Not a TJ image, but something like this.
