I just finished up replacing my rear main seal, oil pump, oil pan, and timing chain. After sealing everything back up, I primed the oil pump. To do this, I first added oil, then turned the crankshaft to top dead center on the compression stroke (Verified by feeling air pushing out of the first cylinder with the spark plug removed while the harmonic balancer’s notch lined up with the “0” on the timing cover). I made sure not to move it through this process, then I removed the camshaft position sensor, inserted a long flathead screwdriver (cut to fit in a drill), and successfully turned the oil pump until I felt pressure, knowing it is now primed. I then reinserted the camshaft position sensor. One note is that when I went to reinsert it, the notch would not align with the oil pump. I turned the notch on the sensor slightly a couple times until it went it successfully. Was this my mistake?

When I now try to start the jeep, it cranks and sounds like it almost wants to start, but won’t.

I had to disconnect a bunch of things to do the RMS replacement, so I’m not ruling out something else, but right now I think I screwed up the reinstall of the camshaft position sensor. How would I go about verifying that, or reinstalling it correctly?

I want to add that my jeep is 2004, since I know other years have different sensor setups.

When you replaced the timing chain were you absolutely positive you got the timing marks in the correct place? If its a crank no start after reading what all you replaced that would be my first thing to double check. I don't think the oil pump would be the issue. Sounds like a timing issue. Did you make sure to plug the crank sensor back in after replacing the oil pump? Also did you remember to put the key back on the crankshaft gear for the timing gear set? How does the motor sound when its cranking? Healthy?

I did somehow incorrectly reinstall the cam sensor. Just found a tutorial on how to realign it with a toothpick when the engine is TDC. Jeep is running now. Thanks
