Check engine light on after fill up

Hello….05 TJ manual 4.0 30K miles. About 20 miles after fill up, the gauge drops to empty, the check engine light comes on. If I shut off the engine briefly, gauge works again but CEL stays on. Code P0463. I disconnect the battery briefly, CEL goes off until next fill up.
Note: when filling up, pump stops after gasoline spews out some; it does not shut off ahead to prevent the overflow from happening.
Any suggestions?

The overflow is a well known problem for the '05-'06 TJ's. The band aid fix is to swap the filler hose with a GM hose. The proper fix is to drop the tank and remove the back flow control part (don't know what it is called). Need to file down the sides a bit so it moves freely. Plenty of write ups on both fixes are available online.
