Hi all, this will be my first post here and I am still new to the Jeep world. I have a 1998 Jeep TJ Sport with the manual. My research as well as what I've observed tells me I have a AX-15 transmission. This transmission was swapped in by the previous owner so I can't say with 100% certainty that it is in fact an AX-15. I have 3 questions I am hoping someone can help me answer.

1. Is there a way I can visually identify the AX-15 without having to take anything major apart.

2. I have identified the source of a leak I have as this small hole near where the trasmission meets the transfer case. It appears to be approximately 3/8's in diameter and looks to be a factory hole. It is on the passenger side of the transmission. I have provided some photos. I have pointed out the hole with a pick tool.

3. I was thinking of filling the hole with gasket maker to try and stop the leak but I want to see if anyone has a reason to think that might not be good? Thanks!

That is a weep hole. If it’s leaking ATF the transfer case input seal leaks. If it’s leaking gear oil the transmission output shaft seal is leaking. Do NOT plug the hole.
