Im very very bad about keeping my garage clean, so let’s get that out of the way. Over a year ago I had worked on a transmission that had taken on a lot of water. I drained that into my catch pan, and then transferred that to an empty ATF jug to be recycled.

Fast forward a year+ and I decide to do a little garage cleanup. I find several empty jugs, and several full ones. Great, what is new, what is old? Here goes. I pour about a cup from the first jug into the catch pan, brand new ATF, nice! Then I pour the 2nd one….. suddenly I remembered that I had already done this step last July. At any rate this is what water does to transmission fluid when allowed to sit for a long period of time.

The white is some sort of emulsified quasi-solid, almost like congealed fat like if you let the frying pan sit after cooking bacon. I think the moral of the story is probably that if you get water in your trans, let it sit for a year, then drive it.

I use a sharpie or paint pen on every bottle or bucket of fluid I open. When I opened it, when it contains something to be recycled...I also have a shelf/area for new fluids and a shelf for what needs to be recycled.

Having a sharpie isn't the problem. Remembering to use it is the problem. Organization is generally not my strong suit. I wish I could have any organization whatsoever in my garage. I have too many hobbies and too many kids doing too many things, and not enough discipline to just put up more shelves and use more containers to keep like-minded stuff together.

I did, however, find that of the 4 torque converters I found in my garage, the one from my 97 (which in hindsight did not need to be replaced) was actually labeled as such. The other ones are off an XJ (maybe 2 of them), a YJ, and an E4OD. Which is which? Your guess is as good as mine. Why do I have them? IDK. Why didn't I turn them in for the core charge? Obviously because I suck and hate my money. But this isn't supposed to be an indictment on my disarray, it's supposed to be about spoiled atf!
