98 AW4 into a 95 ZJ?

Hi all,
My DD 95 Grand Cherokee is approaching 300k so, of course, it's getting tired.
I'm picking up an engine/trans/tcase from a 98 XJ.
Can the XJ trans be swapped into the ZJ or am I better off just rebuilding the 42RE when the time comes?
I'd imagine the 95 computer wont work with the 98 trans. Wondering how tough that is to remedy, or if it's even possible?
Any other pitfalls?

I haven't done this swap so can't offer much help besides the fact that I know early 1993 ZJs with the 4.0L came equipped with the AW4 before the 42RE came into production. It might be worth searching through some factory service manuals for the early ZJs to see if there is any info there on the differences. I'm sure it can be done, I know a few have swapped AW4s into TJs. Congrats on hitting 300k!

Full disclosure, I'm only at 286k so not quite there. Should be there within a year, if she holds together. For now, there's no reason to think it won't. I'm just trying to get a plan in mind and if this trans won't work I need to plan for that too.

Anyone else have any thoughts on an OBD II XJ trans into my OBD I ZJ?
