Have a new to me 2004 Jeep TJ automatic with 4.0. Had an oil leak and couldn't tell where is was coming from. Took it to a local shop and they said to replace the rear main seal. Decided to get a second opinion from an offroad shop that has done alot of work to my JK over the years. They recommend replace the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket and the rear main seal. So had them do all three this week. Got the TJ home friday and found that it still leaking. Will give the offroad shop a call monday but looking for other opinions / experience on what is leaking.

It could be coming from the rear of the valve cover, but it's most likely your rear main seal again. It's a finicky job, not easy to get right. I say make them redo it until they get it right. Hopefully they warrantied their work.

Valve cover gasket can leak up above and drip down in that area and be mistaken as a rear main seal but if they did those both as well as a oil pan gasket, I'd put my money on someone messing up the rear main seal. Super easy to or shear a piece of it off during the install.

I'm not sure if this adds much, but my rear main seal was replaced back when my 2004 4.0 Sport auto was under warranty.
