I have a 2001 tj, 4.0, automatic.

When i first start in the morning, when cold or wt, it shudders when applying the brakes.
It only does it on the first or second time & only when applying the brakes.
While it is shuddering i can slip it into neutral & it stops immediately. This leads me to believe it's trans related?
Has anyone else ran into this?

Torque converter lockup can cause shuddering when engaging brakes if there’s an issue with the converter locking up too early or not releasing properly.

It could also be a slipping transmission, bad transmission mounts, etc.

In addition, if the brake rotors are slightly warped or if there's surface rust, it can cause a shudder when you first apply the brakes. Since you noted it is only in the cold or wet, moisture could be causing some surface rust, especially if the vehicle has been parked for a while.

Thank you for the reply!
It only shudders on the first or second stop... after that i can drive the rest of the day with no issues. It was bad the other morning & actually stalled the moter.
This morning when it shuddered, i slipped it into neutral and it stopped shuddering immediately. My guess is the torque converter.

THANKS!
