Working on this exact kicker sub install right now. Cut away a lot on the inside that may have been in the way, but it is still not "sitting down" all the way. Seems like the tight side (in the picture the bottom side of the speaker is much tighter to the plastic circumference than the top)...

Wow, what an amazing write up! Thanks so much! I just got an 03 as well and the top was grey. Thought about the whole painting thing until I read your how to. I figured it was worth a shot. I did magic eraser, meguires cleaner wax and now am waiting for the ceramic turtle wax to arrive to...

What did you do for prep? The top on mine needs a refresher of some sort (black), but haven't painted much and don't want it to just flake back off.
