Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

I set the AA motor mounts where the kit intended them to go and while it allowed several OEM parts to bolt back on it greatly limited what I could install due to the distance from the water pump pulley to the radiator. The 16" fan I'd run previously would move a lot of air (1400CFM, from memory)...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

Update time to bring this up to date! After trying all of the easy fixes to address my marginal cooling system, it was time to spend some money to fix this problem for, hopefully, the last time. Before ordering the fans I took a piece of scap PVC pipe and cut it to the height of the fans to get...

    5.9 swap questions

Late to the party, but a 1997 Magnum V6 Dakota fan clutch is the shortest one available (see pics from my thread). The trade off with that clutch is that it'll make accessing the front of the engine a pain as it pulls the fan extremely close to the engine. I'm running a cheap eBay stock...

    5.9 swap questions

I did a lot of research, made a spreadsheet with part numbers and saved pictures from forum threads (I can share a link to all of this if you want it) so I had a pretty good idea going in. There was plenty of things I had to source as plans changed along the way though. I can't stress enough...

    5.9 swap questions

I swapped a 99 Durango 5.9 into my 97 2.5 / AX-5 TJ and have about 5k miles on it so far. It's been a great swap that I've really enjoyed as it has good power, utilizes mostly stock parts and looks factory because of that. I don't regret the swap and enjoyed the experience, however, it will...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

Update time! Apologies for the long post, but I’ve been busy. I swapped out the front Rough Country springs (intended for a 4cyl) and 2” spacers for 3.5” JKS dual rate springs without any issues. The JKS springs provided the same lift as the RC springs did with the spacer but made a substantial...

    JL shocks on a TJ

I figured I'd bump this thread since I swapped JL shocks onto my TJ after seeing @kmas0n do this. I picked up a set of 4 low mile JL Fox shocks for $135 (same ones noted above), grabbed a few Barnes 4wd shock tabs and weld washers out of my stock and went to work. The shocks use a metric bolt...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

No real updates on the TJ as it’s been serving part time DD. Total miles on the swap to date is 5,779. I’ve been collecting parts for the next round of work, including 3.5” JKS Dual Rate Springs, a set of JL Fox shocks and am planning out the cooling system changes / upgrades / modifications as...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

I have the stock 4.10s in it and managed to find an 8.8 with 4.10s as well.

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

Yes, the plenum gasket was replaced when I did the Hughes kit. I double checked that this gasket hadn't failed when I pulled the intake.

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

I finally carved out some time to update this thread. Picking up from where we left off, I decided to take a weekend to get the Jeep back up and running. The short answer is that it's fixed, though I'm not entirely sure what the problem was. I pulled the intake off and re-sealed it (in...

    318/360 swap into a 99

Yep, I'm happy to answer any questions you have. I went from a 2.5 5 speed to a 5.9/46RE and have really enjoyed the final product and have put close to 5k miles on it so far. I'd never done any wiring close to this complex and while it did take me a minute to get through, a good spreadsheet to...

Scrat 2.5 to Scrat Limited 5.9

Thanks for keeping us posted with the updates! You're reminding me of all the catching up to do on my thread. When you get ready to work on the AC system feel free to give me a shout if you need any part numbers or want to borrow my crimping tool to build custom hoses. Shipping from my house...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

There’s less chatter and more build coming up, I promise. The plan was to spend the next day at Dollywood since I’d never been and my wife had worked there for a summer. I knew the Jeep wasn’t able to make the trip so I made the call to rent a car while we figured out what to do with a...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

Road Trip Day #5 (aka Tuesday) We had 2 days in Knoxville so I got to plan one and my wife the other. So I did the right thing and took us to Windrock, which was only 45 mins away. The general plan was to see the scenic overlook on G9, grab lunch at the prison and possibly hit Caryville Flatts...

Replacing the third brake light with an LED 'chase light'

Here is a fun mod that I completed over the weekend and have been really pleased with the end result. I wanted a better third brake light than the stock unit and ran across THIS unit that looked up to the task. I made a mount that bolts in place of the stock unit: For the wiring, I copied...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

I was running that Spal fan but ended up swapping back to the 16" Mishimoto I had earlier (LINK). I know enough about cooling fans to know there's a lot of tech behind them that I'm clueless about - but need to learn. This fan is slightly offset of the water pump pulley and is within 1" of...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

It’s road trip time! After all the work I’d put into the TJ to get to this trip I was beyond excited. Maybe even a little giddy. My wife and I got loaded up and headed out about 2pm, dropped the dog off for boarding and hopped on I-459 headed east at (roughly) 70mph with the A/C going. It was...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

Oh, I've read that thread and all the comments. The 8.8 swap is a no brainer in my opinion- I bought an 8.8 with 4.10 gears and an open carrier for $250, a Barnes 4wd truss kit and all the misc. parts for this axle for well under $1k. I went with the Barnes 4wd truss swap kit. Barnes has one...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

I sure don't plan for this to be a show rig. I'm hoping to get the 8.8 swapped in over Christmas and start wheeling it.
