I have a 97, this is the one I used. And when I say clicks I mean there are several little teath that the white clip engages into, slide it back a tooth or two to make it downshift sooner and upshift later under throttle. I have the exact same setup as you.

Pretty sure you're fine. As long as you have all the clips and thrust washers installed it will all tighten up as you put everything together

Mine did the same, I had to bend the bracket around to get everything to line up. It will work, just don't be afraid to move the little tab as needed to get things right.
