Overlanding the Moose

ok. It looks kinda badass.

I think...the Fox steering stabilizer can be adjusted via the valve. I haven’t found a need to adjust the Fox on my TJ, as a matter of fact it improved the highway speed “feel” of the steering.

I agree. I think it will be better, mentally, once I straighten the wheel out

All the major hardware is bundled in a kit? From where did you buy this rear view mirror upgrade?

The mirror was a used unit off e-bay. I can get you the exact number. It had a wiring harness and sensor attached but the plug was different. The built-in Rubicon harness had everything already wired up so I didn't have to mess with that. Just needed to plug in the mirror and the temp sensor. I cut the wires for the mirror and crimped on the Dupont connector. If you can skip the map light, you can find the mirrors all over the place for cheap. I was stuck on that damn map light so I had to drop $150 on the mirror.

If you don’t mind, please. No rush. I noticed the exterior harness awhile back and consider that Fraud/Waste/Abuse to have dead weight hitching a ride so, let’s see if we can put this thing to work. Plus it would be nice to see how much I’m freezing in the morning while out camping w/o a cell signal!

Here's a graphic showing most of the Gentex line of mirrors. Mine is the 50-GNK30 or 50-GNK31. Not sure what the difference is between the two harnesses (Mito vs. Gentex)

Awesome, thank you!

Thanks to your information, I installed the GENK20A. Thankfully, the Jeep already had the oem harnesses for the optional mirror. Required minor modifications since I couldn’t find a plug & play oem mirror jumper but now I can see the temp and confirm through direct correlation why my toes are freezing or my skull is sweating!

If anyone is wondering about the Hooke Road bumpers, here's a little overview.
They go by a few different brand names (EAG, Vijay, Hunter, Ubox).

Front Bumper:

Rear Bumper:

I had been looking for a single-action tire carrier and they are muy expensivo. I was able to get the front and rear for around $700.

They seem pretty well built to me. Installation wasn't a big deal in spite of the crappy instructions. No surprise there. It's pretty obvious where the parts go, though it is a bit fiddly - lots of nuts and bolts.

The only real challenge was the rear bottom bolts that go up into the frame. The holes are just a bit short. If I would have test fit before putting in on, I probably could have made the hole bigger. Will need to use a dremel to do that now that it's installed.

Great thing about the LJ is that there is a lot of space between the bumper bracket and the fuel tank. No need to drop the tank to get to the bolts. On the TJ, you'll need to drop the tank to get to the additional screws inboard on the bumper.

Love the single-action tire carrier. Only gripe is the bumper that rides on the door. If you don't get it lined up perfectly, it will squeak and rattle on every little bump. Fortunately, adjustment is easy.

Also, for later model TJs, you will need to put some spacers on the plate that mounts to the tailgate. Otherwise you'll be closing up the vent in the gate. I've heard stories of people blowing out windows if that vent is blocked. I printed out a 1" spacer in carbon fiber and that did the trick. After doing that, however, you will need to shorten the bolts on the clevis that attaches the tire carrier to the gate.

Tires are 33" and I was able to mount it pretty low which helped a lot for visibility. Currently working on a bracket for the third tail light.

I’m digging the tire carrier attached to the rear gate, may modify mine with this setup. Great idea.

Google “single action tire carrier”. This was important for me as sometimes my wife drives the jeep and anything I can do to make her life easier means I can keep getting Jeep parts. 😉

Last week got all new ball joints and Crown steering installed. The Moose handles like a new vehicle. At first I was a little jealous then I realized this vehicle is mine. :)

Yes. "Installed". I did not do the installation myself. Too cold and no time. So I sucked it up to the tune of $650, which was double what I expected. They sent the rig out to another shop to do the alignment and that particular shop is known for charging way too much. My bad. I did not request an estimate. And since they know I'm on a mission to bring the Moose back to reasonable condition, they used their discretion. Next time I will be more careful about my requests.

To recap the list from my OP with the things I've completed crossed out:

  • Things I knew about
    • Leaky heater box
    • Swaybar link bushings worn
    • Clutch master/slave needs replacing due to the pin falling out of the cylinder
    • Cracked windshield and rusty frame
    • Wrong radiator
    • Rear passenger side shock mount bolt cross-threaded
  • Things they found
    • Upper and Lower ball joints loose
    • LF axle seal leaking
    • Hi pressure power steering hose leaking
    • oil pan or front seal seeping
    • valve cover gasket leaking
    • LR axle seal leaking
  • Miscellaneous
    • RB1 stereo needs maintenance. I think the amp is going as well as the DVD head. I bought a double din bezel and will likely go that route instead. Still worthwhile to restore the RB1
    • Soft top fabric and side curtains are shot. '05 Unlimited tops are stupid expensive
    • Fender rot on the deck on both front fenders. I am going to attempt a shadetree repair myself. If I screw it up, well I guess new fenders are in my future anyway. I'm not convinced I want high-clearance replacements. Not a fan of the look. Other than that, I'm surprised at how little rust there is. Minnesota eats cars in the winter.
Next up will be the axle seals. I will have a shop take care of the front. For the rears, I will likely get new ChroMo axles that include the seals.

Hopefully I ca do the power steering hoses myself. However, the lack of YouTube videos showing this is not encouraging.

And as scary as the clutch pin problem I'm having sounds, it hasn't really been an issue...yet. Definitely needs to be taken care of before I do any wheeling.

Been a while since I've updated this. No real progress on the list above :/
Will be replacing clutch master/slave this week, hopefully. It was an issue on the trail.

Took the Moose on a road trip to Gilbert, MN and the Iron Range ORV Park. Got the Gilbert Tattoo ;) (the reddish/brown shit that doesn't come off easily)

over a year later.
We all know this story: rusty-ass fenders.
Years ago I had some new fenders painted by a body shop. Finally got some time to install. Way easier than I anticipated. I'm fortunate that all my bolts were rust free. Hard to believe as a Minnesota Jeep. Perhaps testimony to diligent winter washing.
Unfortunately, the ol' war wound reared it's ugly head and I totally tweaked my back.
And by ol' war wound I just mean old.
