Jeep hit my kid head-on today

First, let me say that I’m glad your son wasn’t hurt. I hope you can get a good settlement from the insurance company.

That BMW does not look good compared to the Jeep. Maybe it looks that way by design, I.e., the previously mentioned crumple zones and a combination of the height of the Jeep bumper vs the lower BMW.

I was involved in a similar crash about 7 years ago. I had a 2003 Tahoe. I was stopped at a red light in the left hand turn lane. I got the protected green arrow and started into the turn, I was probably going 10 mph. A Nissan Titan pick-up ran the red light at about 55 mph and plowed me. The impact turned my Tahoe about 90 degrees and pushed me across 2 lanes of traffic onto an island. Both vehicles were totaled. But here’s the thing...none of the glass in either vehicle broke. No cracks, no breaks, no shatter.

Although this accident wasn’t his fault, I wouldn’t be buying my 17 y/o a high end vehicle with his driving history. He’d be riding a bicycle for a while until he could buy his own vehicle. A late model pick-up, or full size SUV...something with a lot of metal between him and the other guy. Gas mileage is overrated.

This is a silly and uneducated argument. Car accidents are the leading cause of death for the age group 15-24 and the research and development of vehicles these days is unbelievably comprehensive. If you think a late model pick-up (late model anything) is safer than an E90 you need to educate yourself. You’re correct that a larger vehicle will fair better in a head on collision, you’re incorrect that they are safer and completely wrong with late model vehicles. This car has 6 airbag and all of the latest safety developments... it most likely saved his life.

As far as “making him buy his own”, everyone loves to give their opinion on how to raise other people’s children. This kid is a straight A student that works 2 jobs and has never even had as much as a bad note come home. He’s a fucking angel. I’m amazed he’s my son sometimes. I dropped out of high school, got arrested several times, and was smoking weed like it was my job when I was his age. My parents made me buy my own vehicles and I was still a piece of shit. I have the means to buy my teenager a safe reliable car. I’ll be shopping accordingly and apologizing to no one.

The Jeep may look better, but there's frame damage there. That's a total loss. And the only thing that saved the Jeep driver from serious injury was the airbag.

The BMW actually did very well. Being hit head on by something bigger and taller than you usually isn't something you walk away from. Looks like the passenger side took the worst of it, which is good news for the driver. The newer crumple zone vehicles do extremely well in head on collisions.

Glad your kid is ok, and I hope they throw the book at the bastard in the Jeep. My dad was killed in a very similar accident. Drunk driver, a long time ago, before airbags and crumple zones.

The Jeep certainly faired better but that’s simply because it was taller. Had the vehicle been the same height they would probably both be dead.

As far as the other guy, I’m going to let the law deal with him and forget about him. I’ve made mistakes in life and my hands aren’t clean enough to judge or hold some sort of grudge.

Anyone trying to argue that a large SUV is safer is Period thinking like its the 1970s still, and as far as "high end vehicle" goes, e90 went out of production in 2013, so that car is between 8-14 years old with a used private party value of about 3700-6500. You would have to be some kinda special to not buy something like that to keep your kid safe, maint. and repair prices may be higher, but that's a small price to pay for something he can be proud to drive, and you can feel assured that he's safe. By the way, this is a Tj forum, we are all driving death traps, go look at the factory sticker on my hard top that says "This top and doors are not intended to protect the occupants of this vehicle, and are only intended to protect from the elements"

Sorry for the mini rant, and I'm so happy your kid's ok.

ps. the e90s have 8 air bags, 2 front, 2 side impact, and 4 curtain. 10 if you include the pretensioners.

Dead on accurate! I paid $5500 for that car. I could have easily paid that for a POS truck that would have killed him.

Well, I had a much shorter post typed out that basically said I was having flash backs to my accident when I saw the picture of your son’s car. I decided to delete that and that’s when the dumbassery kicked in! And I shouldn’t have posted the third paragraph at all. I was not trying to tell you how to raise or protect your family even though it didn’t read like that. It was intended to be mostly In jest. So apologies for that.

As for the rest of you guys piling on, kiss my ass! (<<<also in jest...I deserve it!)
