What could be causing this knocking noise?

Not yet on the drive shaft. BUT, I put my Jeep up on jack stands and ran it. Once in 2nd gear and the tires spinning we pushed in on the clutch and kinda popped off the clutch (almost rocking the drivetrain)and this sound came from the transfer case. Plus the T-case has a slight leak from somewhere. t-case is full.

I’m trying do download a vid

Did you pull the driveshafts yet? Need to narrow it down.

Hey I was able to download a video. Didnt know if you could see it or not? After putting the jeep up on jack stands, we put the jeep in gear and ran it. while the tires were spinning we pushed in on the clutch and let off quickly , kind of a rocking motion and the transfer case was knocking, like it had some slack in it. would that be normal under any jeep with no weight or torque on the wheels ?

Wish I could help but I haven't had a stock 231 in my Jeep since 2005. Then I got a 4:1 TeraLow and in 2006 got a STaK's so I honestly don't know if that is normal or not.

I hope you can figure out the knocking noise. Do you still have your other tires & rims? Did this noise start when you installed the TSL SX II tires? If you still have your old tires and rims try putting them on and see what happens.

How does your transmission mount look?
good to me. ive had the skid plate off several times and checked that .. and even posted a picture on here, and everyone said it looked good to them. But its such a hard rubber so I guess if it were bad it would be torn apart??

yes i do still have them. i might try that.
while running the jeep on jack stands yesterday, I noticed what looked to be a VERY slight if any wobble in the rear tires. and when i ran the speed/RPMs up, there was an on and off vibration throughout the jeep. Thats not right !

Since this more or less started when you put the SX-II's on I'd swap back to the old tires and see if you can figure it out. Being able to HEAR helps and I know those SX-II tires aren't quiet.

ya know surprisingly enough , Those tires are so quiet. I had some mickey thompsons ATs one time that made more noise that my SX2s . But I think ill swap them back just to check to see if the knocking is still there.
Im about the do a gopro taping pointing at the transfer case and see if it makes the noise under normal weight and torque.

Pull the skid. Pull the mount. I had checked mine several times and it looked fine...then I pulled it off. The whole inner part of the rubber was ripped and torn up. No way to see it when mounted (even with skid off).
Then pull the driveshafts. I'm not a 231 guy (mine's a Rubi) but the output on at least the front transfer (IIRC) is held on by a nut similar to the axle input pinion. So it could be as simple as a loose nut, or some stripped splines. Or rear splines. Also be certain the trans to transfer is fully tightened too. Hell, while your there check the bellhousing.
--Make sure to support the tranny when you drop the skid-- If you can do this while the Jeep is on jackstands will make it all the easier.

Also, can't open your vid. I only have cellphone data internet. And it wants to open the file with 'PHOTO' and obviously that didn't go well.
Keep digging. The truth is out there 👽

Hey I actually uploaded my first yourube video if you can watch YouTube , search for NP231 rattling

So fingers crossed, I may have found the problem. The bushing is gone on the rod inside the circle. And it is raining like crazy.
p.s. the drive shaft was good 👍
