Hey there guys,
I have a 99 4.0 that has experienced some intermittent studders or miss while driving at highway speeds. last time driving it did it and i pulled it into neutral and revved it to maybe clear it out and no issue till i went to leave work and could hear an audible miss that was new at idle. scanned the dtc's and got the 301 code for cylinder 1. A quick check the next morning i found my evap canister plug on the top had been Chewed or rotozipped off. Im assuming its a year model difference that maybe im an early build that does not have the leak detection ??? anyway before i go to swapping injectors and plugs and wires....would a leaking canister cause this misfire issue due to vacuum leak?

new plugs, wire, cap, and rotor installed less than 500 miles ago. the highway speed intermittent shudder was present before the tune up, but had since gone away till now.

Yeah, that's rats or mice and they have probably made a total mess of the inside of your canister...and probably a nest in it as well. I hate rats! Looks like that was a place that a hose connected. If so, that complicates things but you might be able to just cork the hose for testing. In the long run, you def need a another canister. They are still available new and, of course, used.

Try slapping some duct tape over the hole and a cork on the hose to see if anything changes. Also, inspect the connectors on your injectors for any signs of corrosion. Finally, inspect your wiring, everywhere, but especially around the #1 injector wiring. Rats and mice love to chew wires and chewed wires can cause all sorts of issues.

This is prolly it:

Looking at that pic and some others like the one below, it looks like what got chewed off may have been a mushroom cap that was one-way valve to the outside atmosphere or something along those lines rather than a hose connector.

But then there are other listings that what looks like a large hose barb:

I think those may be just missing that mushroom cap though.

Anybody got a 1997-2000 they can go take a peek at?

Poking around the web, I also see the mushroom cap so I'm betting it should be there. The evap system on my '06 is hidden in the back fender and is a completely different design with an electronically-controlled purge valve.

I actually ordered a replacement from Ebay because i couldnt find a pre 99' canister. Should be here Monday hopefully it may make my misfire code go away. i messed with the ignition side a little bit just looking for something obvious. i unhooked the spark plug to see if it made a change. I believe its getting spark there was a substantial amount of change when i pulled the wire. more of a dead miss than a slight one as before. I havent gotten a chance to swap injectors around yet to see if it follows one. the intermittent shudder has me more concerned though. i dont see how a spark or fuel related issue would cause that then go away and then come back.

To assist you in not having the same problem reoccur; try purchasing a couple bars of Irish Spring. Place one in the engine compartment and the other inside the cab of the Jeep. Another thing that keeps mice from taking up residence in the engine compartment would be to leave the hood unlatched, but just remember to latch again before you go out to drive.

im sorta on the fence if it was truly a mouse or not. the filter media is the only thing that made me think mouse. if it hadnt been for that i would have 100% thought rotozip. you can see the the cutting remnants in the bottom of the picture i didnt notice any mouse poop or anything in that area.

since this is a 99 wrangler going off the service manual it should have had the self purging design that has a hose connection right there, but i guess it could be an early build. it just makes me wonder if a previous owner had issues and tried to vent the canister or something. i dont have any evap related codes, but i also dont know if this design would through a code if the canister was leaking.......lots of questions not so many answers lol

0301 is only code im getting for cylinder 1 misfire. which makes me wonder if the canister is an issue. i dont know how engine vacuum would be related, but thats the only way i could related the code and the hole in the canister.
