Finishing up on plugging my rms/valve cover oil fountain of youth.

Question in regards to placing lower half of seal into bearing cap. Where did you guys applied anaerobic/rtv ?
I see 3 different guides doing 3 different things:

https://wranglertjforum.com/threads/how-to-replace-a-rear-main-seal-on-a-jeep-4-0-engine.27142/
does what service manual says, which is place the seal into bearing cap dry and apply anaerobic around the edges.

this one does the same thing, but adds anaerobic at the tips in between seal and cap.

This youtuber goes all out with rtv and covers entire bottom edge of the seal that mates with cap.

Sooooo, what the heck did you guys do?

Lightly oil the seal itself. Apply anaerobic sealant as the FSM states. I believe it was a dab on each side of the cap and the block.

I also installed the seal with an offset. (I have the newer style RMS without the ledge that sits on the cap. Mine looks like the first pic) I have synthetic oil in the Jeep right now and bone dry after a few months.

Your first two pictures show different RMS design used through out the years. That YouTuber is doing nothing but making a huge mess for the next guy to clean up...

The important bit is you get the block and bearing cap cleaned up GOOD. Then just use a dab of anaerobic, I would say the first pic you posted looks best IMO.

Thanks guys, i did go by the FSM which was like the 1st pic.
And just now realize that there are two different seals for different years.

By the end of sliding the upper seal in, i unintentionally pulled on plastic guide and it fell out. Tried to save the situation with a flathead screw driver, but still managed to make a small cut at the outer edge 🤬
Assembled everything back together in hopes that it had no effect on anything... lets just say if i didn't have rms leak before, i sure do have it now 😁
