HVAC air only blowing through defrost vents

Check at the firewall where the heater hoses connect. Just above them is the vacuum line that goes through the firewall with a check valve. It is a pretty tight bend on the plastic vacuum line. Mine had a crack/split in the line that was next to impossible to see until I disconnected it and straightened it out. I ended up cutting the line and slipping a small piece of rubber vacuum tube over it to fix the problem.

+1 ↑ This is exactly the leak mine had.

I am looking at all my vacuum lines now, so far I can't find the leaking culprit! But I will continue to look. They say patience is a virtue, but dang vacuum leaks sure do try mine!!!!!!!!

Great advice! I have to put in a new stereo head unit, so I'll be in there anyways, in which case I'll check out the lines.

Thanks for this!
Right on. Let me know how it goes. I still remember the cold air pumping out properly on low when it was diagnosed lol!! Message me for ANY questions cuz I looked at everything from disconnected lines to the actuator to switches to even melted wires. If you haven’t found anything- your destiny lies beneath the wall lol.

I think I may have found my issue and it wasn't hard at all:

Not sure how this happened, but clearly it melted.

It was melted to the hood to tub ground strap of all places (you can see the mark on the ground strap where it was melted to). Does that strap get hot or something?

I need to splice in a piece of rubber tomorrow and see if that solves my vent issue. I'm guessing it will.

@Chris Is that a burn mark on the ground strap?
Sorry, just noticed you mention the burn mark. That ground strap must have gotten hot somehow.

Yes, that burn mark appears to be where the vacuum line melted to the ground strap. Not sure how on earth that would happen. I mean it is 115 here, so maybe that has something to do with it.

If it melts that vacuum line, I'd isolate it from that wiring harness to protect it also. I'll have to check mine to see if the ground strap is touching anything like yours.

Mine was a broken line closer to where it comes off the manifold. A half assed previous repair attempt with a wad of electrical tape made it easy to find. I found the right sized hose for a tight fit around the harder plastic line and spliced the two ends back together.

Thats what I am going to do, find a way to isolate that ground strap. I would hate for that to happen to the main wiring harness.

I can't think of any reason that ground strap should get that hot. The only electrical device that could possibly ground through the hood is the underhood service light, so unless something has gone way wrong that ground strap should be somewhere between the underhood air temp and the temp of the hood itself. I'd start poking around with an IR gun to see where all the heat is coming from.

I wonder if it had anything to do with the Arizona heat. I mean it's 110 here almost daily, so it does make me thing. Either way, I'm going to wrap the line in something just to be safe from now on.

@Chris as well, is it normal to feel air blowing out exactly where Rich’s picture was taken? I’m trying to find this vacuum leak and it is not fun :/

UPDATE:
I think I found my culprit… that little green end

Update: Woke up this morning and everything was working! During my nice, heated drive this morning to work it dawned on me. Your TJ needs to be running to diagnose vacuum issues… LOL
