This is the ONLY place I was ever able to find one of these when I had to replace it on my TJ hardtop:

My understanding is that apparently you can't get these from the dealer anymore. Not sure why that is (or how this guy happens to have so many of them), but I'm posting this here for anyone who ever happens to need one of these!

mine was separating and leaking. Took a ton of silicon to it and now its fixed ha. Cant even tell either.

My Dad had 2 of these sitting at the house that he bought for Lucy. He said they didn't look right... He was chasing a leak in the back also. Dunno, I think the one is still in bag from extreme terrain. I'll take a better look once weather and time gets better for me.

I used the one from eBay on my hardtop when I restored it. Not a single leak, and it looks and fits perfect.

BTW, I live in the PNW where it rains probably more than anywhere in the US!

I've been trying to figure out if there is supposed to be a seal along the top of the tailgate?

I have like a 1/4"-1/2" gap between the top of tailgate and bottom of liftgate...and just wondering does anyone know of anything to better seal off the gap? or do I just need a fresh one of these here?

(I do have one of these bottom lift gate seals on but is 17 yrs old).

I have a soft top and ther is a seal on the top of my tailgate. It's mates to the bottom seal of the soft top. I've tried to look for one (not that hard yet) but haven't found the replacement part yet. Mine is still functional but part of the seal is torn and it will fail eventually.

I can't seem to find a definitive part number for that seal, does yours happen to have a number anywhere on it?

Unfortunately no part number. Here are some photos of the seal. I'm not sure if this is a stock piece or the previous owner added it. I was able to pull it right off so there is no adhesive to make it stick.

UpperMI, I think your tailgate seal to be an add-on. I've driven my 2000 TJ since I picked it up from the dealership and there has never been such a seal on my tailgate - that is, until a few days ago, when I installed one. Search ebay for "Universal Rubber Edge Trim Seal Protector Guard Strip Van Boat Truck Bonnet". I measured the thickness of the tailgate upper lip and bought the edge seal that fit, the one that shows it to fit 1.2mm to 5.8mm. My ebay item number is 171222731304. The metal inner stiffener appears to be soft aluminum, so the seal is easy to cut and it just pushes on and holds tightly.

Previously, I had followed another suggestion and bottomed some screen spline in the mounting groove of my lift gate glass seal. Originally, I had been using a length of paracord and still got leaks. The screen spline worked much better to beef up the contact between the seal and the glass. This edge seal on the tailgate serves to press it home a little more.

No real tests yet, but it's been raining about every week lately, so I expect to know soon.

Thanks for the tip. I'll search eBay for the part. Once I was able to pull it and I had no adhesive I figured it was an add on. But it does work to keep the rain out (which I got a great test two weeks ago).
