Picked up a project Jeep this week and starting to work my way through the issues. It’s a 2001 with a 44 rear. The spiders are toast and are delivering in a couple days so I started taking everything apart today but ran into an issue. The gears are stamped 41 11, im assuming 3.73 gears(haven’t counted teeth). I don’t see how I’m going to get the cross pin out past the ring gear. Is it safe to take the ring gear off or would that effect backlash, etc ? I don’t know how to set gears if this would change anything.

Removing the carrier and ring gear doesn't change the gear setup. It is commonly done when installing a lunchbox locker to remove the cross pin or shaft.

Edit: some people even grind the ring gear so they can remove it easily if they need to again although I didn't do it on mine

I thought so but wanted confirmation before taking it off. Hank you. Ring gear bolts are single use correct ? I didn’t notice I’d have to remove the ring gear so I didn’t order any yet

My 2000 FSM calls for 80 ft/lbs on both ring gear and bearing caps.
