Broken Spring

I removed the dash panel on my 2004 TJ under the steering wheel and I found this spring broken. Any idea on where it goes or what it does? I could not find anywhere that looked liked where it would belong.

Looks like a spring for drum brakes. Somebody may have just tossed it in there after a brake job.

Looks like a rear brake shoe return spring, though not one from a TJ. Why it would be up where you found it is a mystery...

Can you raise and lower your steering wheel? I noticed a spring assist on my tilt option today when I was under the dash.

Yeah, I can raise and lower my steering wheel. Nothing seems off or broken.

I have a complete steering column that I’m about to dismantle and part out. I’ll put eyes on it in the morning and see if I see this spring and if so, show where it came from. It does look like a spring from the brakes to me.

Here’s your spring. There are 2, one on each side of the column.

You can likely still tilt but you are supposed to have 2.
