We raised our kids in the country. There was no cable TV and nobody had a phone till we moved to the city when they got older and they got a car and started to drive on their own and got jobs at age 16 (job is required). When they were young we homeschooled, built forts, raised horses, chickens, hunted deer, taught Bible, improved the land, cut timber, learned gun safety, shot guns, killed nuisance critters, cooked, cleaned, made our own jerky and sausage, built furniture, and any number of other household chores.
