How much did you guys get charged for drum brakes?

Drums really aren't that bad. I have no idea if that price is good or not, because I do my own, but I feel like changing the drum brakes shouldn't be more than $200. (Again, just a feeling, I could be completely off base) having the proper tools makes it way easier, but I changed the drum brakes on my WJ last month with tools everyone has (needle nose pliers, flathead screwdriver, and a pick) and it took me about an hour. You'll cuss the springs, but it's honestly not bad, just frustrating.

I just had new drums, shoes, hardware, and wheel cylinders replaced on my 1997 TJ. I originally hired a well known mobile mechanic that I've used for other vehicles in the past. His quote was $450. Unfortunately, he broke the brake line when he was removing the passenger side wheel cylinder and tried hiding what happened by saying the Jeep's axle seal was leaking, and he had to order a new seal and differential gasket.
Something wasn't sitting right with me, and I had another mechanic come look at the Jeep. The guy literally looked underneath the Jeep without jacking it or touching anything and immediately saw the brake line had been cut. A few hours later, the Jeep was towed to a shop that the second mechanic recommended. The shop did all the work, plus the new brake lines, for a grand total of $720. (The tow was an additional $101.)
Not sure the complete breakdown, but the drums alone were $82 each at AutoZone, so I would expect to pay $300-$400 for new drums, shoes, and hardware.

Why bother doing a disc conversion if the drums need to be serviced every 200k miles?

I did mine at 272k miles, only because some fool over-torqued the lug nuts and using a torch destroyed the cylinders. I did the full rebuild even though the drums could have gone a bit longer. The springs were iffy; I'll give it that.

at 200k i would be thinking that doing the wheel cylinders and maybe brake lines is probably smart. do it once, do it right, 200k miles from now you can worry about it again or just be dead by then.
