I have a gmrs that I don't know how to use. The clarity is nice, but I miss the simplicity of the CB.

I don't understand - set the channel, press the PTT button, talk. Release to hear response.

Because now the channel is locked, or has a privacy code, or because someone else has those settings set they cant hear me but I can hear them or vice versa.

I still have my old Midland 75-822 CB that I bought years ago. I like it because it can be either handheld or used with a permanent mount quite easily.

That said, I have just gotten my GMRS license and bought a Retevis RA86 GMRS radio that can be mounted remote and all controls are in the mic.

Haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet, but it looks promising.

No CB on mine (or my buddy's TJ) but instead, Btech UV25 mobile units with an external Comet dual band antenna. Those inexpensive Chinese radios operate within designated FCC band frequencies and beyond those, allowing GMRS as well as Rugged Radio "race frequencies". With dual band and all regional repeater frequencies programmed (keep a cheat sheet for quick reference), we have the ability to reach out well beyond short distance range of CB or GMRS in the case of a medical emergency or to report a wildfire. We use the same setups in our Can-Am Maverick Sport Xrc units (in combo with headsets connected to passive junction boxes). IMO, CB (or GMRS) units are OK for group communication but fall well short of using legal FCC repeaters in combo with a HAM license. Although reporting such emergencies is legal without an FCC license, understanding communication basics and how to obtain and program repeater frequencies has a learning curve that is well worth the time and effort...

Uniden Pro 505XL CB with a Firestick antenna and I also always bring my Baofeng F8HP handheld. Some guys I ride with use the CB and others use GMRS. Mounted the CB far enough forward that I can still tumble the passenger seat as long as I remove the mic from its cradle.
