For all of us with two wheels also

And it's something that I've not achieved, yet.
I've been up to 90 on a rented Sportster, throttle set and no hands on the bars.
But I prefer life at a 98:1 crawl speed.

I've done 156 on my GXSR once... Been 120 on my Road Glide & yes set the cruise and ran without hands for a while too... But I'm with you I enjoy going slow more.

Was trying for a top speed run on my ZX-10 back in the day but chickened out at 145.
I miss that bike!

1992 GSXR 1100 was the fastest production bike at the time. I can honestly say I've had it above 120 numerus times... Got 3 tickets and had to go to traffic school after the 3rd one... They'd clocked me over 100 MPH each time but they were cool and wrote me for 70+.

3rd time I was trying to catch up to this BMW that had been converted to 4WD and just as I do it's a pretty gal driving it and she is pointing over her shoulder.... I look in the mirror and am like FUCK..... So pulled over and he was just shaking his head and laughing at me. Honestly I'm surprised I didn't kill myself on that bike.

They had a track day at Laguna Seca that I attended and got it up to almost 170 MPH but that was as fast as I'd ever want to go on 2 wheels. The 156 was on the road going towards Watsonville up from Monterey. I lived there for 2 years after I'd gotten out of the Army.

Owned 3 different sport bikes in that time too...

Hell I went 165mph on my brand new 2003 Yamaha R6 back in the day. I did 196 mph on a newly paved road on my Suzuki Hayabusa racing my buddies modded Yamaha R1

That bike did 89mph in 1st gear….with 5 more gears
It was a serious ripper

No more speed for me,
I am on choppers and baggers these days

Yeah, that 89 ZX-10 was the fastest production bike in the world when I bought it. I'd have to look, but i think it topped out around 167.
I actually went to the bike shoo for a new chain for my Harley (Sportster 1000 XLCH).
Accidentally bought a ZX-10 and didn't put the sportster back together for 3 years!
I used to do San Diego to Vegas run in about 3 hours, every other weekend.
Only got stopped once at 120+ cop just shook his head and told me I'd go to jail or the morgue if he caught me again.
Literally told me, "Thats a beautiful bike. Keep it below 100 and get a new tire."
I looked and my balls shrunk 2 sizes when I saw cord showing.

My parents neighbor had a black 81 Yamaha XS eleven special , It was real quick in it's day , I thought it was a real cool Jap bike and much quicker than another neighbors Honda 750-4 . But the Honda was pretty cool in it's own way . I never had a street bike , only a Yamaha DT-1 250 Enduro .

A little feedback from the adventure bike crowd, please-
As a consolation prize for selling my TJ before the move to Italy, I think I'm gonna treat myself to some new (to me) wheels.
Current top contenders are the Honda Africa Twin CRF 1000L, and the HD Pan America base (not interested in the ride height control, I have a 36" inseam and can reach the ground just fine).
Bike will be used for it's intended purpose throughout Europe while we're over here. Sometimes two-up, but mostly just me bombing down whatever road or trail I feel like till these people get sick of me.
Looking at 2019ish vintage, dont want to buy brand new and I can grab either for <$10K in good shape. The Africa Twin does shake out about $2-4K cheaper for comparable mileage locally.
For reference, I'm 6'2", 245 with a 36" inseam, no serious physical limitations, 45ish years of riding experience on a bazillion bikes.
Will consider BMW or KTM, possibly even a Kawi but the bimmer and KTM come at a premium with no added value that I can see.
I know, the HD comes at a premium also But, fuck off! 'Merica, bitches!
If you have a preference or pros and cons, I'd love to have your input before I throw my money at something.

You'll need one of these in Italy

I've ridden all of these bikes save the Harley. The BMW GS1200/50 is by far the smoothest and most comfortable to ride - also the heaviest. The KTM 1190/1250 Adventure (which I own) is the fastest - by a huge margin - and much lighter than the GS, but nowhere near as comfy as the BMW. The Africa Twin is right there in the middle - fairly smooth, decent performance, lighter than the BMW, heavier than the KTM.

If I'm doing primarily on road stuff, I'd stick with the GS - especially for doing 2-up. It is far and away the best riding, and most comfortable, of the group.

More on the dirt side, or for pure adrenalin, the KTM. 150+ ponies, 470 dry, it leaves the others in the dust. Also the best off road - especially with a good set of knobbies.

No exposure to the Harley at all, but that is what Rick rides, so I bet he can weigh in.
