Something is wrong with MORryde tailgate install

Finished installing my tailgate tire carrier today with the rugged ridge heavy duty spare tire mount and it’s sticking out way too far. Am I missing something here? I’m unable to mount the tire mount without using the provided offset brackets but even if I wasn’t using the bracket, it would still be sticking out way too far.

Does the RR mount stick out further than factory? What is the wheel backspacing?

I don’t think mine is the exact same but I ended up getting rid of that bracket but I had to cut the top

Why use the RR mount? My stock mount has been fine with the MORryde. I have 5.25" backspacing and it hugs so tight that the MORryde hinges act as additional snubbers.

I have the same setup and i knew before i even purchased it that the spare tire bracket was going to stick out way too far. I'm using the OEM spare tire carrier with my MORrryde and is spaced out much closer. I have the MOAB wheels with 5" of backspacing and it works perfectly on the OEM spare tire carrier with the MORryde setup.

I was hesitant to use the factory mount with a heavy wheel tire combo 35x 12.5 on ar 10” rims . I can’t use the mount without the z brackets, am I better off returning the mount and getting an OEM mount from my local salvage yard ?

35x12.5 tire, factory tire mount, 4" backspacing, no mount spacer or snubber spacers. The tire sidewall is touching the hinges. It has been this way for many years.

Whatever is going on is with the RR mount, with the mount spacer and/or the wheel backspacing.

When I installed the MORryde system with my Hutchinson Rock Monsters, the OEM mount wouldn't work due to the backspacing, and I had a hard time finding a mount that would work. The Rugged Ridge definitely didn't work. It was both too far away from the tailgate and at an angle. Unfortunately, the mount I ended up using, which worked really well, is no longer available. It was made by Hyline Offroad.

Do what is easiest. I don't know why the Rugged Ridge spare tire carrier is even paired with the MORryde spare tire reinforcement systems. I want my spare tire to be as close and tight to the tailgate as possible. I ran a 35 x 12.50 x 15" tire on my 02 TJ for 9 years with no problems. As long as the OEM spare tire mount doesn't have any RUST on it or any cracks along any of the joints it will work fine. As long as you use the correct rubber snubbers to tighten the tire against the tailgate and not move around it will work fine.

Yup the stupid RR mount has shown up on several threads now with guys having the same problem as you. Return it and get an OEM.
That offset/z-bracket that came with the kit is for raising up the carrier if the tire can’t clear the bumper. Rather than using that it’s typically recommended to re-drill the mounting holes in the carrier or use a wheel spacer to get it just past the bumper, but ideally you want it as tight to the body and low as possible. Not sure if your 35” will clear or not, I just finished getting the MORryde done on mine last weekend and my 33” barely cleared the bumper.

This ^^^

I had that carrier in tandem with the RR Spartacus HD hinge kit.
The hinge kit was actually pretty nice. Rock solid, opened and closed smooth. Unfortunately no greasable pivot points. I got rid of it because it wasn't compatible with the over-spare cargo basket I wanted.

The carrier... I hated it. It was a really HD piece of steel but the wheel was cantilevered away from the tailgate with no support. It was pretty solid and didn't bounce around (when it was paired with the hinge kit, but it stuck out on a sky-hook.

There are two versions.. the straight and angled. Both should have been easy enough for RR to manufacture so they were against the snubbers.

OK, bumping this thread because I'm facing a similar issue...

When I installed my MorRyde hinge/reinforcement kit, I spaced the snubbers out another 1" or so and was able to use the factory spare mount with the factory Rubicon spare wheel & tire.

Now I'm going to 35x12.5 tires on a 17x8.5 wheel with 5.3" backspacing and a 5x5 bolt pattern (maybe someone will guess what wheel that is). Low and close to the tailgate is the goal. I still have the stock 5x4x5 carrier. I had a 5x5 carrier of similar size and build, but I stupidly sold it because I thought I'd never need it. Lesson learned... thou shalt not selleth Jeep parts.

Ideally, I'll be able to set up a carrier that will let me remove the spacers from my snubbers. I just don't know what that will be. Does anyone have a similar setup and can point me in the right direction? I've just bought a RC spare mount spacer, but I'm concerned it'll push the spare out too far.
